No, positive discrimination is not about "cheating", nor is it about "a free disability pass", and is annoying sometimes.
Let me share something I've experienced all my life : Positive Discrimination.
I am disabled since birth. I won't tell you the specific, just know it's a mild case of dystonia, but I can walk and talk.
Positive discrimination. Ah, yes, the topic of many debates. Some people seems to think that because it has "discrimination" in it, it's bad and should not exist while other argue about it being a pass for disability and stupidity. Well, let me tell you something :
* It is great to have that positive discrimination going around since it opens a lot of opportunities for special-aid people.
* Positive discrimination only works on workahollics who cannot do some things (or are slow to do) as well as a valid person.
* No, we are not taking your job by bypassing certains achievements. However, I can see how some may believe in this.
* No, it's not cheating. You know why ? Because to disabled folks out there, you have unfair advantages.
* Yes, positive discrimination don't apply in some situations (I remember a story in which a woman firefighter could not pass a door, while a man could because the woman was too small and not as strong, they said it was injustified and vert risky positive discrimination. I hope I will not be rescued by that woman if I am blocked in a room.)
* Yes, positive discrimination is annoying sometimes, even for us, disabled folks ! It's fustrating. And even if we know we can do X, they might positive discriminate because they don't think we can.
I was helped by a school aid, but when I started to study in Uni, I was very stressed as I was alone, trying to deal with all the stuff that all my friends and brothers have already gone through and they would laugh at me (kinda shitty of them, but love them) for not knowing what to do on the spot, simply because I was helped with. So positive discrimination with my helper was a bit detrimential to me.
However, if I didn't have my helper, I would not be there. Yes, it's unfair to other kids, but I needed her.
End of rant.
