My mom told me this recently (I'm 28) and BEGGED me not to tell a soul.. but I just think she's such a BA for doing it that I had to share with *someone.*
She was living in NYC and frequently hung out with her older brother (who was gay) and his friends. One of his friends had gotten out of a bad relationship and the ex had reported him to immigration for being in the country illegally. They asked my mom if she would marry him to help him stay in the country and she did it!
She wouldn't get into too much detail, but as far as I know it worked and they were happily divorced a few years later.
