My father seems to think in order to be successful in business you can't be completely ethical and you have to be hustling and doing schemes in every aspect of the operation to squeeze out every dime. I disagree.

My argument is this doctrine creates so much aggravation, stress, complications, bullshit in the business owner / operators life it keeps him super occupied and almost bogged down. In the end it's really not worth it. He / she is unable to take a step back and look at the big picture.
I look at my fathers operation and it's a struggle to get through a day. It's the reason why the business is kinda stagnant and staff (including myself) get burned out quick.

There are some businesses where this is very true, auto repair, auto sales, doctors and hospitals who look for added tests to run to make more money. Magazine companies and phone companies, TV satellites that slam you over a period of time and you will not notice. It is dog eat dog in a lot of cases.

Every industry is different and every business is different. There are definitely some businesses that survive in spite of being owned and run by idiots. There are definitely some businesses that thrive by being well-run, calm, and treating everyone with respect.

You know very quickly when you deal with some businesses whether or not they are on the up and up. The ones who are always offering a "deal", compared to those who have built a solid reputation, are one's to stay away from. I am willing to pay a bit more to companies with a solid reputation for good, quality and guaranteed results. It's really a no-brainer. And never buy crap that is "Made in China".

You can run a successful ethical business. In fact, it likely works better. When you treat customers nicely and honestly.....they come back. If you need proof look at Donald Trump's businesses. His casino in Atlantic city was sold because it had failed. Multiple bankruptcies and not paying the people that he owed.

It depends on the business that you go into. Many businesses can be run ethically. Some businesses can only survive by being shady. Choose wisely and make sure your eyes are open before you choose which business to go into.
