Kinda bumb but omfg the female skate scene
I'm a girl that skates. I've been doing it for 4 years, I'm not sponsored or anything because i believe skating is more for fun(for me anyway).
I've been consistently going to the same parks for most of my 4 years skating and the change in the past year is absolutely ridiculous. When i first came to the park it was all guys, most of them were nice and the others just didn't speak to me(which is fine). It was ya classic guy skate scene, it was awesome.
But in the past year it has changed massively. There has been soooo many girls coming in to try skating(which is good I'm not hating on girls that genuinely like skating in fact i have friends that are girls i met at that park in the 3 years where it was awesome) but most of these girls do one of the following
1. Come to find a boyfriend- they do no skating until the guys they like come over then when a guy is with them they do whatever he says and fall into his arms (which is so painfully obviously intentional)
2. Do it for the trend/social media- Skating is just a photo shoot for these ones, they come in take pictures by the sign, sit on ramps and take pictures, do the bare minimum and film it then post it on Instagram or something and write about how hard skating is and hoe determined they are. Also they stand on a board once and put "skateboarder" in their bios.
3. Do it for fashion- They come into the park head to toe in skate brands(which is fine if you genuinely want to learn to skate but these girls don't), they go down a ramp fall and leave. Again usually post about it on social media.
4. To try and get publicised- these girls hardly ever go to the park I'm talking 1 time a year and thats it, then as soon as it gets out a video shoot is happening they all come running and claim they are super into skateboarding.
5. To be angry feminists- they come to the park in some "grl pwer" shirts (again fine if you genuinely want to skate) but ONLY if its girls night/a video is happening. They pose for pictures/talk about how skating isn't a guy sport and "will totally be dominated by women in the next few years".
This really annoys me, i know its stupid but i feel like they have no respect for the culture/history of skating. I go to the park every Espeacially on Thursdays and its pretty much empty apart from a couple other dudes but then a video happened once and about 40 girls who i haven't seen in months since the last girls only night show up and on the video (i wasn't in it btw but it's fine that's just my choice) they claim to be hugely into skateboarding/at this park all the time and say that the guys (who are all laid back and will even give tips if you are leaning) are intimidating! I understand that the guys could come across as a bit scary(some of them are at first!) but it's not fair to fully hate on all them.I don't think they realise that without all the "intimidating" guys skateboarding wouldn't exist, the skate brands wouldn't exist and more importantly they wouldn't be able to put "sk8ergrl" in their insta bios!!
(Just want to make it clear, I'm not hating on ALL girl skaters of course theres genuine ones and ones that are just beginners i get that, i was a beginner once. I totally support girls AND guys that are skating for the right reasons and respect what skating is about.)
