In honour of stealing money from our jobs, I got my manager fired, more of less accidentally.
About 15 years ago I worked in a little snackbar downtown. It was well known the manager "borrowed" money from the till, but because he was chill and we could snack for free as much as we wanted we didn't care. The snackbar was owned by a guy who also owned the bars nextdoor. The money was piled together, so finding the theft out would be difficult.
One day I needed quick cash while at work, so I took it from the till, with all intents and purposes to put it back ASAP. I didn't. I started using a system where I wouldn't register the purchases from customers on the till, but instead would do the math in my head and pocket the money. $20 soon became $50, and $50 became $100. I worked there 2 or 3 nights a week so we're not taking about massive amounts of money. The money went towards school and rent, without this money I don't know how I would've survived.
One day the owner asked me if the rumours he heard about the manager stealing money were true. Being complicit I lied as best I could, ending with a sarcastic "if you want to worry about anything, worry about him eating all your food". The manager was morbidly obese, it was a running joke everywhere.
The owner took me seriously and secretly installed hidden cameras a few days after our conversation, while I was working alone. He told me he started counting the snackbars earnings separately and found money missing. He made me promise not to tell anyone. I ofcourse told all my colleagues, but not the manager. I think because we weren't really friends, or because I knew he would get caught and I would get away with stealing.
He got caught. He was fired. I got away with it.
