I told my girlfriend I was in love with another women and had to leave her. The actual reason I was leaving her was because she got fat and seemingly refused to lose weight.

I had known my girlfriend since we were 9 years old. We started dating at 19 and it went on until we were in our mid 20s.
In the last 18\~ months of our relationship, she gained a ton of weight. Not just chubby, but seriously obese. If I had to guess I would think maybe 250 pounds at 5'4. And she got upset whenever anyone mentioned her weight, and seemingly had no interest in truly going out of her way to lose the weight. I just was not attracted to her, at all.
But I also did not want to leave her over something so... mean. I had to give a reason, I couldn't just say "you got fat, sorry", even if that was the reason. It just felt so mean.
Instead? I said I needed to talk with her, and I told her I was in love with someone else from my old job, named 'Jane'. I even made an entirely new facebook for this 'Jane' person, and I used pictures of an overweight women, so that my girlfriend wouldn't think I was leaving her for someone skinny and fit.
Obviously she was upset, she cried. But she also said that she knew this was going to happen, and that we hadn't really been happy for a while with each other, and that she was sorry and all that. It was an amicable breakup. But I could tell it was not going to be amicable if I hadn't made up this person. When I first told her, she was VERY upset, then when we talked about it after and I told her about Jane she seemed to calm down when she realized Jane was also fat. I think when she first heard me say that I was breaking up with her, the first thing that came to her mind was that it was because she was fat.
I know it was a lie. But she was a sensitive person, and I just did not want to hurt her feelings like that. It wasn't hard for her to connect the dots of me leaving her with her weight gain, so I had to make up some bullshit excuse so she wouldn't think that.

You lied, but it was for a good reason. But you also enabled her to not pay attention to her weight, so in a sense, you shielded her from the consequences of her actions. It was something that you did out of love, not wanting to hurt her.

If she's obese now, she'll be worse in a couple of years ... Cutting her loose is a very good thing! that you did
