I just found out that my mom had to teach me how to read on the side because my dad says she's Catholic and wasn't as able to teach my sister how to read as much

For my dad, calling something Catholic is a way to illegitimize anything. No one knows really what it means except for him and he doesn't even seem to really know what it is either, it's just a blanket term for anything, everything, and anyone who's uneducated or causing problems in the world. Mass murderers? Catholic. ISIS? Catholic Islam. U.S. army? Catholic. My mom? Catholic. Even though she's the victim in the relationship. I seriously can't fucking believe this. Leaving for university is going to be such a relief he's an asshole sometimes with rules that should always be followed, not following them leads to an absolutely ruined day especially since he's also an alcoholic. But we've been good about following these rules most of the time. But when something goes wrong, all hell breaks loose. And there's no use trying to explain yourself that's just going to make it worse.
As I'm writing this my mom and sister forgot to turn airplane mode off of their phones so they can't pick up his calls, which as you might have guessed is a rule of his, phones on airplane mode at home so we don't talk to our friends and don't get cancer from the phones, which I know can't happen, but when we leave automatically the phone has to be on. She just fucking driving her to a field trip like holy fuck she's not even going out. I guess it didn't hit me before how controlling he really is, such a fucking parasite. I'll be glad to be rid of him eventually.

Yeah, for all the positive messages sprinkled throughout it, Catholicism really is just an institution of control. It took growing up and understanding it on my terms to get it, but god, what a bunch of bullshit. Dunno how old you are, but yes, soon you can get out from under that cloak of nonsense and live your life, not that of a man made book that doles out power to those who quote it.
