“Laugh all you want to, but this is how employers look at it. They wonder why you didn't get a college level job right out of college. You are better off to hold out for an appropriate college level job, rather than take a lower job. ”

And how long do we wait? 10 years or 15 years or 20years ?? Your degree will be outdated by then. This is the dumbest thing I ever heard of. You sound like the 2021 finalist for laziest person of the decade.

They hold it against you if you have college but then go work at McDonald's or Wal-Mart. Your whole future gets defined by those menial jobs if you do that.

“We tried to tell you that having a philosophy degree and a communication degree were useless, but you thought you knew better. HaHa!”

Actually, I have a philosophy degree and it's done nothing but help me. It's basically a degree in logic and critical thinking. Computers, for example, are an easy, natural fit for someone with a philosophy degree. At least when I was in school, we were the first accepted and recruited into medical and law school, even over pre-med and pre-law. And we also finished first in all the tests to get into grad school (GRE, LSAT, MCAT, etc.) and in all areas of those tests except math, where math majors finished slightly ahead of us. Studying philosophy has always been considered the cornerstone of an educated mind. It's only within the last 200 years that various subjects start branching off into their own disciplines. For example, the father of economics, Adam Smith, who his BY FAR the most quoted economist in history to this day was a professor of philosophy, so I can read his writings and literally understand him better than an economics student because I understand how he's constructing his arguments and know whose work he's building on. Philosophy, as a subject, only became a societal "joke" in the last three decades or so, and though I'm not implying that it's causal, take a look at where society has gone in the last couple decades. When you meet a philosophy grad who's not making money, it's almost certainly a choice. I started making six figures just a few years out of college and have been doing so for 30 years now.

No, that's eristic, which is no allowable in a philosophical discussion. And if you had a good education, you'd know that. Philosophy does not allow itself to be deceived by the kind of personal baiting and side choosing that yo've done here. It requires a practitioner to utilize the best tools that mankind has come up with over the last 5,000 years to discern facts and truth, whenever possible. This is why, for example, you'll rarely ever find a philosopher who has committed himself to the delusional world of left or right, or Republican or Democrat. The issues are analyzed based on facts and reason, not belief and emotion. Complexity and detail are embraced, not denigrated. Detailed and honest debate is the goal, rather than short, insulting retorts. The very word philosophy (philo-sophia) means love of knowledge or wisdom. These qualities are what, historically, used to define an intelligent, honest broker in life but sadly, for a segment of our society, no more. Our founding fathers, for example, were all very well educated in areas of philosophy and our country is based largely on what they learned reading those texts, but I'm sure that you now see them as "liberal, socialist professional bullshit artists", and that's a real shame.

You sure sound like a lazy entitled loser.

You ever stop to think how much more embarrassing it is to say you haven't been able to find work since Obama was president?

As a department manager, if i interview two candidates with the same degree, I'll take the guy who swallowed his pride and got the McJob done. Fuck the chump who has the same degree but thinks he's too good to earn his way through society.

At my college recruiters rejected you unless you had a 3.5 GPA. They rejected you if you didn't major in a certain subject, they rejected most people that way. Those recruiters are set up to reject people.

    Pathetic.

Hey OP, so job hunting is essentially a self marketing exercise.

So while you may be well educated, you are likely not marketing yourself well.

My suggestion? Try a resume service or recruitment firm or something to see if you can alter your resume and search strategy to better market yourself.

    Good luck

There is a pecking order in college.
Kids sign up for engineering, Those who can't cut it switch majors and go into the college of science.
If science is too tough, the next stop is the college of business administration,
Business administration drop outs go to the college of education.. Average SAT scores in the college of education are 900-950.
You have to be pretty dumb to drop out of education. But here are those that do. So they end up in the college of liberal arts, majoring in philosophy, sociology, women's studies, left handed puppetry, etc.... you get the idea. Don't get me wrong, there are very smart kids in all these fields , but the number decreases fast as you go down the list.

The top of this list gets the big dollar starting salaries. The bottom of the list ends up working $35,000a year jobs.
If you want to get into med or vet schools, they will accept engineering science and chemical engineering BS degrees with a 3.0 average. Pre-Med and pre-vet majors need at least 3.85 average to have any hope of getting in. I don't know about law school. Don't have much experience there.

Of course, if you ask any college department, they will tell you that their degrees are the best to have.
But then you have to wonder why so many of peoople with these degrees work $35000 per year jobs.

If the OP was as smart and educated as he claims to be, he would not be sitting on his hands waiting for a job all these years.

“I find it very hard to believe that recruiters were rejecting people based on their grades. People in the real world don't give a shit.”

A large company comes on campus looking to fill maybe 30-50 jobs across the company. And they will visit anywhere from 10 to 30 schools each year.
At each school they will interview up to 300 kids.
Grades play a very large part in the recruiting process. Recruiters have very little else to go on. They look at maturity in the interview. They look for certain interest that may match up with their needs. They try to match up students career goals with the company needs. They will reject 95+% of the kids they interview.

You are right, people in the rel world don't give a shit about the grades but that is generally after you have been in the work force for 4-5 years and have proven our competency. or initial hiring, grades are very important.

“Degrees don't mean anything anymore. If you pay the university and show up to classes, it's basically impossible NOT to get a degree. A degree in and of itself does not qualify you to do anything. ”

Evidently you haven't tried to get an engineering degree lately.

  • Commented Jan 14, 2022 03:15 by anonymous

“Because having a college degree is additional qualification. This puts people with college degrees in the group of qualified people to choose from. ”

Your absolutely wrong. All most degrees do is show that you or someone paid your tuition and that you might have shown up for classes.
If I were looking to hire a manager for my machine shop.Who should I pick? Someone with a college degree that sat on his hands waiting for that fancy job? Or someone who took a job at Kroger, started as a bagger, and shopping cart collector, .within a year moved into the stock room and the to cashier and then got promoted to produce manager?
You bet I will hire that kid who worked at Kroger. He has the potential to become my shop manager. I'd start him out at $50,000. He should be able to learn all the functionality of a machine shop in two years. Then I would promote him to full shit manager at $85,000.

I would also consider hiring the guy who started working as a dishwasher at Smokey Bones. And quickly moved to to customer service (waiter) and into he kitchen as Apprentice cook.

I would also consider a person that instead of working, volunteered to help with various activities benefiting his community.

I would not consider anyone not doing anything for a couple of years and whining about it. Don't need the baggage that come with that.

This isn’t something new. It has been like that since the 70s and 80s. Slowly it will come around, but lagging so far behind. We just can’t start from the top or middle with what we have as a degree. Have to start from the bottom, but everyone wants to start from the top. This is the reason why we are not getting job that we are further educated for. Sorry! Face the facts..
