I hate when people don’t pronounce my name correctly. I was raised in a predominantly white town so I grew up pronouncing my name in English.
I am Hispanic. I’m not gonna say my name but pretend it’s Maria. I don’t pronounce it in Spanish when people ask for my name. I naturally pronounce it in English. I am not ashamed of who I am but it doesn’t feel natural if that makes sense. I got upset the other day when i went to the pharmacy because when I told the person my name in English he then pronounced it in Spanish & I felt disrespected. Of course when I speak to Spanish speakers I pronounce my name in Spanish but if I am speaking to an English speaker then I will pronounce it in English. I feel embarrassed now saying my name in English to Hispanic people because I think that they think I am ashamed of my culture.
