I am Norwegian. My family has been in the US for about four generations, but can trace our family back to a village that is our namesake. I have a book published by a genealogist in my family showing this. I would love nothing more than to be able to embrace that and share it with people. I am also into weight lifting and fitness, so the idea of being a Viking helps push my workouts. I'm aware of their sorted past, just like the imagery.
You know who else likes Norse and Viking imagery? Fucking racists. I cannot go into a single group chat or actual conversation about it without some chud joining in and talking about pure bloodlines and master races. I am an extremely left leaning, progressive, inclusive person. I would love to share my culture with you. HOWEVER, I don't want you cherry picking the parts of my culture that fit your racist agenda.
I just want to have a gnarly beard, wear cool themed jewelry, and talk about vikings without people raising their eyebrows at me.

Sorry but in order to keep culture, you first have to keep culture worth preserving. And Norwegians are the trailer trash bums of the Scandinavian world, always have been. At least the Swedes are funny.

I'm glad someone spoke up. As always, the whole racism thing boils down to money, follow the money. I use to wonder why white men allowed slavery. I'm talking poor, and working class white men? I know why the plantation owners did it. I mean, these people were going to take their jobs and work for free. "All" the jobs, carpentry, brick laying etc. Slaves didn't just pick cotton. Poor and working class white men went along with it because they were told they were better. These people aren't much more than apes, they were told, you're better than them. So they poked their chest out and accepted it, willing to screw themselves because they wanted to believe they were better than somebody. The republican party plays that same card to this day, give white males a bunch of feel good stuff, guns, illegal aliens, Heck trump is a billionaire and poor and middle class white males are sending him buckets of cash, go figure.
