I knew a kid who was so against sports and his father living vicariously through him that any sport he was forced to play..He was so bad at it that the coaches didn't play him. He admitted knowing how to catch and hit a baseball, but, on purpose, would do so bad, swing at anything, and act afraid of the ball, that he'd ride the bench all the time. On our own, away from his father, he played fine and was an ok player. But with dad hounding him, he'd intentionally do so bad that the bench was the only option. Did the same in basketball. Wouldn't guard anyone, shoot every time he got the ball no matter where he was (and tell the coach..game is about putting it in the hoop, right?"). His father finally gave up.
